That article forgets to mention that the island in question, Lohachara (as well as Bedford), disappeared 22 years ago. See here and here.

It's still an interesting happening, but the Independent article and its copies that have been circulating throughout the blogosphere give the mistaken impression that this is a recent happening; the only recent part is that this particular team of scientists got around to noticing it.
